Background
Femtosecond (FS) laser is an infrared laser with a wavelength of 1053nms FS laser like Nd: YAG
laser works by producing photodisrupton or photoionizaton of the optcally transparent tssue
such as the corneas Applicaton of either FS laser or Nd: YAG laser results in the generaton of a
rapidly expanding cloud of free electrons and ionized moleculess The acoustc shock wave so
generated results in disrupton of the treated tssue (figure 1)s Howeverp the two lasers difer
significantly in the amount of collateral damage they causes Nd: YAG laser has a pulse duraton in
the nano second range (10-9 second) where as FS laser has pulse duraton in the femtosecond
range (10-15second)s Reducing the pulse duraton reduces the amount of collateral tssue
damages In factp collateral damage with FS laser is 106 times less than with the Nd: YAG
laser. This makes FS laser safe for use in corneal surgeries which require exquisite precision.

LASIK fap creaton
Technique
The sucton ring is centered over the pupil and sucton is applied once proper centraton of the ring has
been ensured and verifieds The docking procedure is then initated while keeping the sucton ring parallel
to the eyes An applanatng glass contact lens is used to stabilize the globe and to faten the corneas It is
important to achieve complete applanaton of the cornea to avoid an incomplete fap or other fap
related complicatonss unce the laser’s computer has confirmed centratonp the surgeon administers the
FS laser treatments Each pulse of the laser generates free electrons and ionized molecules leading to
formaton of microscopic gas bubbles dissipatng into surrounding tssues Multple pulses are applied
next to each other to create a cleavage plane and ultmately the LASIK faps Sucton is then releaseds A
spatula is carefully passed across the fap startng at the hinge and sweeping inferiorly to lif the fap for
excimer laser ablatons
