Bariatric surgery, also referred to as weight loss surgery, is typically recommended for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher (classified as morbidly obese), or those with a BMI over 35 who have unsuccessfully attempted to lose weight through methods such as dietary changes, exercise, and medical interventions under professional supervision.

For individuals with a BMI of 35 or higher, or those classified as morbidly obese with a BMI over 40, bariatric surgery is often considered the most effective means of achieving sustained weight loss. Additionally, for individuals with a BMI exceeding 35 who have concurrent health conditions such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes, bariatric surgery may be recommended if conventional weight loss methods have proven ineffective in reducing adipose tissue.
